Hopefully they've remedied that omission on their current equipment. sftp is also far easier to get working around firewalls, too. Some of the older Canon gear apparently does not support modern, secure, encrypted file transfers such as sftp.
Somebody at Canon is apparently unaware of or has discounted your computer security, through the use a protocol that's wildly insecure and that leaks your username and password to anybody with a privileged network position (coffee shop or hotel networks, etc), and a protocol that's a serious hassle to get working around modern network security around firewalls.
